Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved the way your legal team works and did not come at a huge cost?
A significant but cost-effective innovation we implemented has been to divide our work according to the legal specialisations of each team member, this has allowed for better decision making regarding legal contingencies. Additionally, the interaction between more experienced lawyers and new lawyers has allowed for an exchange of knowledge and in turn has improved the synergy of the legal team.
What are some of the key developments that have affected your business over the past year?
The preventive analysis of possible legal contingencies in matters that are part of the purpose of the Cooperativa Rural de Electrificación has allowed us to manage preventive measures so that when a contingency arises, it can be resolved as quickly and effectively as possible, always trying to reduce the legal, social, and economic impacts, saving costs in time and money.
How do you think the internal legal role will evolve in the coming years?
I believe that with the advent of Artificial Intelligence, the legal role will have to be more intuitive when advising and making decisions in different legal matters, always remembering what E. Couture said, “Law is learned by studying, but it is practised by thinking”. Technology will be a very useful tool for lawyers; however, it will also be their responsibility to ensure that technology cannot replace them. Analysis, reasoning and thinking in line with the evolution of society and its demands will be a fundamental part of the criteria that an in-house lawyer must have when giving advice.
Do you use any legal technology’ products and, if so, for what areas of your work do you find them most useful?
We currently use legislation and jurisprudence compilation services, which alert us to any regulatory changes in the country.
