How do you manage legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis, and how do you align your legal strategy with the overall business strategy to ensure organisational resilience?
I firmly believe that a company’s legal management should convey strong corporate security both internally and externally, allowing the company to continue pursuing its objectives, especially during times of crisis when organisational goals may be at risk. It is precisely in these moments that the legal department must establish policies and action guidelines that ensure good corporate governance. As advisors, our primary responsibility is to guide directors, shareholders, managers, and employees towards legally sound processes and scenarios that support and drive the actions of each area. Another key responsibility of the legal department is to outline action procedures for potential legal contingencies, whether economic, tax-related, administrative, or labour-based, to safeguard the company’s interests and those of its members.
What emerging technologies do you believe will have the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay informed about these developments?
I believe that the integration of artificial intelligence across all legal fields is already having a considerable impact on the legal sector. With the increasing number of technological tools available, corporate lawyers must adapt their actions, processes, and responses by leveraging these advancements. In my specific case, competition in the automotive market is intense, so as legal professionals, our duties are twofold: staying up to date with corporate digital solutions and applying technological tools within our department and the company’s core processes to reduce costs, save time, and achieve better economic and administrative outcomes. Today, the legal department no longer plays a passive role; it must be proactive, generating ideas, solutions, and alternatives within the legal framework so that the company can continuously seize opportunities for improvement.
In your opinion, what are the main trends currently relevant in your country (whether legal, political, economic, or business-related)?
The political climate in Bolivia has unfortunately delivered severe economic blows to private companies, significantly hindering normal economic and commercial development. The shortage of US dollars has greatly constrained imports across all sectors, particularly the automotive industry, as it affects short-, medium-, and long-term commercial plans with vehicle manufacturers. In this context, our legal department’s role has been to first clarify the contractual framework for each vehicle manufacturer, then propose potential solutions within that framework, and finally formalise and adapt the adopted solutions. At Astara Ovando, we have developed a series of solutions to ensure these limitations do not impact our annual goals or affect our clients nationwide. The legal department has been involved in all these efforts, providing the necessary advice to keep our company moving forward.
