How do you manage legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis, and how do you align your legal strategy with the overall business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

I believe that periods of instability or crisis do not necessarily create adverse conditions for companies. In fact, during such times, companies should respond promptly to adversity, rethinking their business strategy to either gain the most benefit or at least mitigate the impact of the crisis. The legal department must work closely with senior management to support the company through the transformations needed to adapt to the crisis. During these periods, it is even more critical for the legal department to identify any potential risks that may arise from non-compliance or breaches of the law, particularly in countries like Bolivia, where there is high government intervention and control in regulated activities.

What emerging technologies do you believe will have the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed and disrupted the modern world. The legal profession is not immune to the sweeping changes brought about by AI. A key concern within the profession is whether lawyers will be replaced by the tools and technologies that AI has introduced.

The challenge is substantial for today’s professionals, including lawyers. Therefore, modern lawyers must be able to benefit from the significant advantages and essential support that AI offers to the legal profession. Personally, I am highly motivated by the prospect of generating positive outcomes through the automation of processes and tasks, decision-making assistance, and other benefits that come with the use of AI. Today, organisations operate in an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment, where staying updated is essential for business development and optimisation.

In your opinion, what are the key trends currently relevant in your country (these could be legal, political, economic, or business-related)?

Undoubtedly, the current economic situation is a significant trend in Bolivia. The country is going through a challenging period due to a high fiscal deficit, a shortage of the primary currency used for importing goods—the US dollar—and the unsustainability of the current economic model, which is increasingly criticised due to its deterioration.

The current government must introduce measures to reverse the present situation. In this discouraging scenario, the role of a lawyer is to act as a preventive professional, not only solving problems as they arise but anticipating them before they occur.
