Carlos Henrique Barroso began his career working as an associate lawyer with law firms in Rio de Janeiro, first as a civil court litigator and then as a corporate lawyer working with Brazilian corporate and contract laws. After approximately 10 years as an associate lawyer, he was hired as general legal counsel of a Brazilian publicly held corporation, called Tupy. Barroso identifies that, ‘having a mixed legal background civil litigation and M&A made my start as in-house counsel easier’. With Tupy, which is in iron foundry business, Barroso has gathered a great deal of experience in an international context, since the firm has subsidiaries in the US, Germany, Mexico and Argentina and sells its products worldwide. In January 2016, Barroso joined Lojas Renner, as the general legal counsel. Lojas Renner is a publicly held corporation in the fashion retail business, with clothes stores all over Brazil and in Uruguay. Barroso has been heavily involved in all of the company’s transactions and litigations, and since joining has made considerable changes to the culture of the group, its use of external counsel and its productivity in an effort to always balance the legal risks and business interests of the firm. To achieve these changes, Barroso hired a controller for the legal department, a lawyer whose job description is to use all the analytics related to lawsuits as a way to better manage the performance of the law firms and control budget. It has made the legal department more efficient in terms of cost and transparency.
