Nominated by numerous sources, Mauricio Joffily Pinheiro is recognised again for his continued leadership of the legal department at Shire, a global pharmaceutical colossus, in Latin America. Based in Brazil, Pinheiro has developed the legal team from scratch, hired nine full time attorneys and created a top notch legal team structure that provides excellent service to the firm separating the legal and compliance functions into separate teams. Recently, he has been the lead on some of Shire’s largest Latin American investments including coordination of the mergers with Dyax, NPS and Baxalta and the legal entity integration of twelve affiliates. He obtained a favourable decision in a US$60m litigation involving clinical trials in Brazil, a major case across the pharmaceutical industry. In terms of advocacy work and government relations, Pinheiro successfully approached the Brazilian government to maintain public development partnerships (PDP) for the tech transfer of rFVIII (a haematology franchise). He also played a large part in defining the legal and compliance framework regarding market and patient access to high cost drugs in Latin America, implementing new treatment protocols in Mexico and Brazil.
