What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Being the head of legal and compliance at a startup is not the easiest thing in the world. During the last year, my team and I were involved in all sorts of matters, like the creation of the compliance program, the development of a video to better explain the legality of the company’s products, which are disruptive, the legal support for the rebranding project, internationalisation, opening to the US market, among other things.

How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?

Choosing to work with external lawyers aligned to the company’s values is essential. The external counsel’s work should be seen as an extension of the work developed by the in-house counsel. You go ask for the help of the external counsel when you need more specialised knowledge. But you can’t only rely on their specialised knowledge – they must understand the needs and values of the company. Yet, I would reconsider working with an external lawyer who demonstrated not to be aligned with the company’s values.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most? Which have you found most useful in your legal team?

I would focus on the use of AI to speed up the way we do our day-to-day activities, whether to analyse contracts faster or to guarantee that all the processes by which the company is a part of are known. In my legal team, I haven’t used AI, but have used a CLM to better control the demands for contract analysis, legal opinions and storage of documents.
