What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We recently participated in important M&A projects and relevant partnerships that reinforced our market positioning. In addition, we recently implemented Visual Law in our contracts and litigation, as well as structuring our main data in BI to improve and facilitate access to information.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most? Which have you found most useful in your legal team?
Artificial intelligence. Today we use AI in the contracts area, and we intend to expand to other areas of the legal field. Lawyers must be allied with AI in the search for efficiency and find ways to incorporate it into their day-to-day activities.
As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?
The internal team needs, first of all, to understand the company’s business and strategic planning. Likewise, the team needs to be constantly encouraged to think about simplification and innovation. Considering that our time is finite, rethinking the way we conduct our deliveries requires a careful analysis of where we should invest our energy.
How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?
It is very important that the internal team understands the business and the company’s challenges. I usually say that internal clients bring their demands as if they were going to a doctor: “Here is my problem, what is the solution?”. However, many times the answer is not so “black and white” and needs to be built together with a focus on the company’s objectives but respecting the legal limits. If not, the internal legal department will become a consultant who will simply say whether something is right or wrong.
