Bio
Emir Calluf Filho has 21 years of experience in the legal and compliance areas. Emir holds a law degree from the Faculdade de Direito de Curitiba (Brazil, 2002) and a postgraduate degree in international law (Brazil, UFSC, 2003) and business law (Brazil, PUC / PR, 2007). Emir also has a master’s degree in international law (Spain, Universidad de Navarra, 2004) and an MBA in Strategic Management (Brazil, FGV, 2013), in addition to having attended the Mastering Business Agility program at INSEAD (France, 2016) and the Program on Negotiation (PON) at Harvard University (USA, 2021).
Emir currently serves as the vice president legal Americas at BHP, where he has also held the positions of legal director Brazil (2020-2022) and vice president legal Brazil (2022-2023). Prior to his role at BHP, he worked for more than two years as legal and compliance director at J & F Investimentos, one of the largest Brazilian private groups with approximately 280,000 employees. Before that, he served as LATAM and corporate legal director at IFF-International Flavors & Fragrances, in Brazil and in New York, US. Emir has also worked in law firms specialising in large litigation and arbitration and served as in-house counsel for companies such as Philip Morris and Britanite (Enaex).
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We have been involved in a vast array of matters spread throughout several different countries in the Americas region. Judicial reorganisation, complex litigation, arbitration disputes and relevant environmental matters, just to mention a few.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Resilience, interpersonal skills, and a hands-on approach are vital to success in our industry. Maintaining an absolute focus on people, whether it is clients, colleagues, or stakeholders, is also crucial.
How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?
We look to work side by side with the business, trying to find solution together.
