What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Our team manages significant litigation, a large volume of contracts, is very active in tax planning initiatives, and is a strategic partner in all business matters. However, it is worth highlighting that in the past years we have been passing through a major digitalisation journey, where we are automating several processes and activities, embedding the use of tech tools, developing a digital mindset in our people and elevating their capabilities by being able to focus on strategic activities since repetitive and low value-added tasks are mainly automated now. As an example, in the labour area we have internalised more than 400 litigation cases, using tech tools to automate defense drafting and to perform hearings in a much more effective manner, and on the tax side we have been programming in python language to gain efficiency in tax planning analysis.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

For sure the following twi qualities: (i) knowing the business of your company in a very deep manner. Good legal advice, in my opinion, needs to be sharp and to fit the business’s needs and reality. (ii) Excellent communication skills. The in-house lawyer needs to be able to translate complex legal issues into clear, simple, and pragmatic advice to the business.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

With the qualities I mentioned above (knowledge of the business and good communication), it is possible to generate an environment where the business counterparts hear and trust the advice rendered by the legal team. Finding legally acceptable solutions to complex situations, using a growth mindset, is also very valued by business counterpart.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

I have been enthusiastic about business initiatives that aim to reduce inequalities and mitigate environmental impacts.
