Karina Close D’Angelo de Carvalho
Executive general counsel, Latin America | General Electric Aerospace
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
I have been very closely engaged in the project for the separation of GE businesses into three independent companies; GE Healthcare, GE Aerospace and GE Vernova. The spin-off of GE Healthcare took place in January 2023 very successfully. GE Aerospace and GE Vernova will be completed in April 2024.
The legal team played a crucial role in preparing the companies for this achievement, actively participating in corporate governance, M&A, litigation, labor and employment processes, among other areas of the law.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
It is vital to be a real partner to the leaders (C-Suite), to spur the growth of the businesses that you support as a legal function.
How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?
I have fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and business counterparts by being open to listening to and understanding the needs of the different stakeholders in the company.
Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about championing diversity and being able to support the various groups within the company – Women’s Network, Pride (LGBTQ+), DAN (Disability Advocacy Network) and AAF (African American Forum). I am committed to driving a culture of inclusion in our company.
