Luciano Dequech is an executive with over 20 years of experience, across both firm and company environments. Luciano has served as a lawyer at Pinheiro Neto Advogados, a legal manager at Braskem, a legal director at Totvs, a legal director at Atvos, a legal director at Construtora Norberto Odebrecht, as well as a legal director at Odebrecht. Furthermore, Luciano was a counsellor at Santo Antonio Energia.

Luciano graduated in Law from USP, where he completed his master’s degree in Civil Law. He has a specialisation in Consumer Law from PUC-SP, an LLM in Corporate Law from Insper, and took the course for Board of Directors, Audit Committee, Supervision, and Internal Controls and Corporate Governance in Startups at IBGC.

Luciano is certified in internal investigation by LEC and completed the controls, risk compliance, and internal audit course at KPMG University. He took the XBA-Xponential Business Administration-Startse and the Analytical Thinking course at MIT. Furthermore, he was president of the Brazilian Chapter of ACC – Association of Corporate Counsel, vice-president of the legal committee of ABRASCA – Brazilian Association of Public Companies, and a member of the Ethics Committee of OAB/SP. Luciano currently serves as the legal, compliance, and risk director at Copaenergia and a is member of the Audit Committee.

What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

The most significant transaction that we have been involved in recently was the acquisition and incorporation of Liquigás.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

It is important to have a deep knowledge of the business and its regulation. Furthermore, in-house lawyers must be open-minded and proactive in their work.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

We have been working on establishing a better understanding the business and consequently proactively proposing solution to our business counterparts.
