What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
In-house lawyers need a strong foundation in legal skills and knowledge relevant to their industry. But beyond that, there are some key qualities that set them apart from lawyers in private practice: (i) business acumen — they should understand the company’s business goals, financial health, and risk tolerance. This allows them to provide practical legal advice that considers the business’s bigger picture; (ii) communication and collaboration — in-house lawyers need to communicate effectively with non-lawyers. They should be able to translate legalese into clear, concise language that business counterparts can understand. Collaboration is key, so they should be team players who can build strong relationships with various departments; (iv) problem-solving and strategic thinking — they should be able to identify legal issues proactively, analyse potential solutions, and advise on the best course of action considering both legal risks and business objectives; (v) commercial awareness — understanding the commercial realities of the industry is essential. This includes factors like market trends, competitor activity, and customer needs; (vi) client service mentality— in-house lawyers act as trusted advisors to the business. They should be responsive, proactive, and focused on delivering value to their internal clients.
How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?
Building strong relationships between legal and business teams is crucial for an in-house lawyer’s success:
Become a business partner — integrate yourself with the business, understand their challenges, and proactively offer legal solutions. Avoid legal jargon and focus on clear, concise communication that resonates with businesspeople.
Focus on solutions, not just problems — do not just identify legal risks; present workable solutions and strategies to mitigate those risks. Make yourself available to answer questions and provide guidance. Regularly update business teams on legal developments that might impact them. Build trust by consistently providing high-quality legal advice that considers the business’s best interests.
Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about data privacy rights or using technology to promote access to justice. I am also passionate about sustainability, climate change, and clean energy initiatives. Regardless of the cause, a strong sense of purpose can motivate me and make me a well-rounded professional.
