What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

A risk reduction project, involving a health plan offered to the company’s retired employees. The group health plan was migrated to an individual health plan, significantly reducing liabilities. Furthermore, we carried out the largest medical device recall in the world, and in Latin America we were able to resume sales before the rest of the world, as we have always been close to the authorities and acted in an absolutely transparent and collaborative manner.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Always think about who is at the forefront, which is the patient. Everything we do must be thinking about quality so that the patient can have a safe product and care.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

We have a seat on the board in all countries. This way we discuss business, not just legal topics, which opens the door for us to be seen as part of the solution, as a business partner, and not as a barrier or a step to be overcome. We run the business together, not behind or in front, but side by side.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

I am fully connected to the objective of the company and the sector in which I work: Improving people’s lives, bringing health and access to health to remote areas. If I can achieve an impact in this sense, I will be very satisfied. Furthermore, as country manager, I want to reduce inequality within the company. Walking through the company and seeing the same diversity of people that I see when I walk the streets.
