Calgary-based Cenovus Energy has an expert in-house legal team of specialist practitioners in the oil and gas industry and is led by Al Reid, executive vice-president for stakeholder engagement, safety, legal and general counsel. Cenovus operates oil sand, natural gas and oil drilling sites in Northern Alberta and British Columbia as well as having a 50% stake in two US refineries. The company is publicly traded on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges and stresses its environmental and social responsibilities including those owed to indigenous communities. The legal team expertly handles these considerations and obligations for the company in addition to legal and regulatory matters. In the last year, the team has assisted on a number of significant deals including an agreement with three major railway companies to transport around 100,000 barrels of heavy crude oil per day from Northern Alberta to the US Gulf Coast in 2019. Additionally, it recently worked on the sale of Cenovus Energy’s Pipestone and Wembley natural gas and liquids business, located in northwestern Alberta for C$625m.
