George Weston
With its roots dating back to the 1880’s, The George Weston Company is a dominant player in Canada’s consumer products industry. It manages subsidiaries including two large-scale brands, Weston Foods and Loblaw Companies. Heading up the legal departments of both of these subsidiaries as well as managing the affairs of George Weston Company is Gordon A. M. Currie, executive vice president and chief legal officer. Weston Foods focuses on fresh and frozen baking products in Canada and biscuit manufacturing in the US, whilst Loblaw is the largest food distributor in Canada and has drug store, financial products and services and general supermarket product brands. Each legal segment led by Currie works under the George Weston umbrella and for the subsidiary company. The entire legal function has impressed peers over the last year, with one highlight among many being its work during the spin out arrangement of Choice Properties, a real estate subsidiary, allowing it to become a separate company. This arrangement required astute handling by the legal department and is demonstrative of its skill and strength.
