Shell Canada
Vice president, general counsel and assistant secretary Gordon McCue leads a highly successful legal team at global energy company Shell in Canada, which is responsible for all legal elements of the upstream, downstream and retail businesses across the country. The team is highly skilled at dealing with a variety of issues related to the energy industry, such as corporate governance and environmental law, as well as the myriad of financial, environmental and corporate regulations involved in the multi-sector energy industry. Shell Canada’s legal team achieved many notable highlights in 2018, including announcing that the final investment decision with the partner investors into a liquified natural gas project in Kitimat, British Columbia, which Shell has a 40% stake in, had been taken. Construction with the help of the partner investors began recently, with the aim of opening the facility and producing liquefied natural gas in the next decade. Additionally, Shell Canada announced the voluntary release of 50,000km2 of exploratory permits in coastal British Columbia, more than 1.5 times the size of Vancouver Island. The company also announced a 50% reduction in its production at the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) to reorganise environmental sustainability efforts and re-prioritise production.
