The American multinational Cargill has had a presence in Central America since 1969 and today its regional operations cover three business units with 11,000 employees, 39 facilities and an estimated 80,000 customers. Comprised of six lawyers and three support staff, Cargill’s regional legal team headed by Honduras-based legal manager Michelle Canelo mainly support Cargill’s Protein Latin America, Feed and Nutrition LatAm and Business Services units. Whilst the team’s commercial lawyers know Cargill’s businesses deeply and are responsible for either a country or one of the cross border businesses, its specialist lawyers have regional responsibility on critical areas of law such as labour and employment, food and environmental laws, amongst others and ‘are able to have a broader perspective on their specialty area, understand trends, share experience and apply best practices from one country and/or business to another’, according to Canelo. Describing the team’s ethos, Canelo says ‘[we are] committed to thrive, own and live our values of being agile and resilient, delivering on our purpose and mission, while maintaining focus on continuous improvement’. Other members of the team include legal adviser Fany Espinoza who has been with the company since 1994 and is a specialist on food, labour and corporate law and María Elena Murillo who has been at the company for over 15 years and currently serves as senior attorney for the Cargill Feed and Nutrition LatAm business.
