Possessing state of the art expertise in all applicable topics such as competition law, privacy, new technologies law and compliance, Unilever’s legal team in the Central American region has managed to create a culture of doing business in the ‘right way, doing our job as lawyers with a mind-set of adding value to the business’, explains Jorge De Los Ríos, Unilever’s general counsel for the Middle Americas region. Undergoing recent structural changes and putting a ‘special focus’ on business partnership, there is a strong integration between lawyers and business people and a commitment to involve lawyers within strategic decision making. The team is currently devoting time to simplify its processes and tools to increase efficiency whilst at the same time strengthening its capabilities in handling compliance matters. During the last two years the team has strengthened its capabilities and expertise in handling compliance matters and other topics associated to situations that may cause business disruption. The team was recently involved in several important projects such as the sale of the soya beverages brand Ades to Coca-Cola and the recent acquisition of the home care and personal care business of the multinational company Quala. This acquisition has effects in more than nine Latin American countries and is a key part of Unilever’s strategy in the region. Legal manager Stephanie Montoya takes charge of the Central America region and is a ‘committed, hard worker and practical counsel who offers creative legal solutions to the business. A great lawyer’.
