Beginning his career as an associate at Cariola Diez Pérez-Cotapos in 2001, Carlos Prat’s rapid rise through the ranks prefigured his current extremely high status among Chilean in-house lawyers; his first promotion with the firm was to open and lead a new branch himself. After performing exceedingly well as a private practice lawyer focusing on the mining industry, in September 2007 Prat moved into in-house legal work as legal manager with Xstrata Copper in Chile, and continued to operate extremely successfully through the company’s takeover by Glencore in 2013. At this point his role expanded to include marketing and logistics, and he has steadily taken on more responsibility since then. His position now includes a role in the Glencore managers team to overlook Glencore’s joint venture Collahuasi mine and – most recently – the position of compliance coordinator for Chilean operations. Prat has a wealth of particular highlights to discuss from his career: ‘Success on projects such as the divestment of El Morro and Energia Austral Projects, the implementation of standard contracts for all operations and the updating of Altonorte environmental permits to address new emission regulations for smelters in Chile required me to develop multidisciplinary teams and lead them. Working with different professionals and leading the teams successfully has undoubtedly enriched my career’.
