Ignacio Mehech
Regional counsel Latin America | Albemarle
Since joining global US specialty chemicals company Albemarle in November 2017 as regional counsel for Latin America, Ignacio Mehech has quickly made strides to promote the in-house legal function internally: ‘I have been able to reduce and make more efficient the legal spend, while improving the level of service for the company. We have implemented cooperation with different areas of the company, and provided top-class assistance to their needs’, he highlights. Mehech joined Albemarle after a highly successful three year spell as legal manager of the El Abra operation at leading international mining company Freeport-McMoRan, his first in-house role. Mehech has built on his skills learnt from the El Abra operation having led the legal strategy and participated in two successful union bargaining processes during his time there, before doubling that figure in 2018 for Albemarle. He says that experiences such as these ‘have allowed me to work cross-functionally with different areas of the corporation and develop my negotiation and strategy skills, which I believe are of the upmost importance to be able to add value to the company’.
