José Pedro Urrutia
Chile head of legal | Anglo American
General counsel Chile | ANGLO AMERICAN
Known as an ‘exceptional GC: dynamic and proactive with a unique understanding of both the mining industry and the relevant legal issues’, José Pedro Urrutia has been at Anglo American...
José Pedro Urrutia assumed his current role with Anglo American in 2013, taking lead of the legal department after the settlement with Codelco. ‘I could not say no to such a challenging task, putting in motion the shareholders agreement’, says Urrutia. Upon assuming this role he was asked to move the legal function from what Urrutia describes as a, ‘back office’ setting, to a boardroom level environment. Urrutia has encouraged a closer relationship with the internal clients of the company, prompting an increase in the legal department being invited to business meetings and workshops. This has in turn enabled the legal team to influence the business at an earlier stage, making it easier to make changes in various business decisions and processes. In recent times, Urrutia has supported the bidding process, awarding and executing the 2016 Anglo American Sur PPA with Enel and now agreeing to its termination and supporting the business in a new negotiation. He has also been involved in the negotiation and drafting the agreements with their neighbour operation, Andina, a company that solves interferences and has operated around coordinated mining for the last 20 years. He has also actively helped with the Guacolda arbitration with Freeport’s Candelaria, the El Abra Sulfolix EIA and the Anglo American Norte disposal of Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde.
