L. Andrés López Campos has consistently excelled as an in-house counsel in big multinational companies in the Chilean market. López started his career as a junior advisor before assuming senior in-house positions in different industries, leading to his current role in Vías Chile that began in 2013. In addition to his role as legal director, he is a part of the steering committee and senior management of the company which manages five interurban roads as well as Autopista Central, the busiest urban highway in Chile. In regards to having this multidimensional role, López comments that, ‘as in-house counsel I have been able to train and develop a business sense that I was not taught or aware of during my early education’, adding, ‘our role as attorneys is to avoid sticking on our sole role as legal advisors and look for a wide range of opportunities as agents or managers of complex situations’. Some the main transactions López has been involved on recently for Vías Chile include a corporate bond issuance of €500m in the local market, a bond redemption, the acquisition of 50% of the shares in Autopista Central and a cross boarder merger between a Chilean corporation and a Luxembourgian entity. Following the recent acquisition by Atlantia and ACS of Abertis Infraestructuras, López had adjusted the legal department and its budget to the new shareholder’s requirements, being his goal to at least maintain the same service level to internal clients within the company. Reflecting on his career, he has the following to share: ‘I have been fortunate to be part of teams in complex transactions, dealing with multi-layered issues in M&A and corporate reorganisations. These situations have provided a more broad view and new sensibility to several issues besides my law degree in my home country and developing a more accurate commercial and common sense in different matters’.
