About

Pfizer’s operations in Chile can be traced back to 1957. Since then Pfizer has established a significant presence, forging its reputation as a key player in the local pharmaceutical market. Ricardo Muza joined the company in 2011 as legal director of Pfizer Chile, before adding Peru and Bolivia to his remit one year later followed by Ecuador in 2014. Muza has provided legal support to Pfizer’s ongoing strategy to focus on innovation, flexibility, diversity and inclusion for the last eight years, including his participation in the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and in the Chilean Chamber of Pharmaceutical Innovation (CIF), in addition to the day-to-day challenges of legal work in a company of the magnitude of Pfizer. These and other initiatives have enabled Pfizer to form strategic partnerships based on its solid reputation. As a consequence of his achievements he was nominated to organise Pfizer’s “International Platform Legal Leadership Program”, an initiative that gathers together talented legal colleagues from 12 jurisdictions in all of the world’s continents in venues such as New York and London. As he says: ‘I have employed my best efforts to be a business partner and a guardian of corporate integrity, always looking for solutions with a thoughtful risk taking approach. Pfizer’s legal division has been an example of good practices and a source of sound advice in order to get things done properly’. With over 20 years of experience, he has demonstrated a superior skill set in the areas of pharmaceutical, antitrust, corporate and intellectual property law. Muza received his LLB from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 1999, and, in 2001, he obtained an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, one of the eight prestigious Ivy League universities in the US. In a previous role as legal advisor at the leading Chilean utility Transelec, Muza impressed with his work on successfully conducting negotiations for and closing studies on environmental impact for the Energía Austral Project. Prior to that, Muza worked as a senior associate for a boutique law firm and junior associate lawyer for a mid-size firm at Honorato & Russi and Larrain & Asociados, respectively. Muza’s tenure at Pfizer is defined by his continuous efforts to improve, from a practical perspective, the company’s ethics and compliance processes. His talent as an in-house counsel was recognised in The Legal 500’s inaugural GC Powerlist: Chile in 2017 as one of the most influential and innovative general counsels who are driving the legal business forward.
