How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?

This is our top priority. We evaluate the firms we work with periodically through specific KPIs, and check for alignment, knowledge of our business and predictability in responsiveness, quality, and fees.

Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?

We have a unique perspective and opportunity to anticipate changes. I personally prefer to implement a proactive strategy rather than reactive measures that “only” comply with legal requirements. We always take it one step further and are constantly reviewing best industry’s practices. This is the case for compliance, ESG, AML, and use of technology, among others.

As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?

We need to act like business partners instead of providers. Forget about the internal client; be a part of the team making decisions.
