How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?

First of all, choosing your external counsel demands one key question, that they share your vision, ethics, and business values. It is especially important that our values align because they will also be representing your name in the industry. The choice of external counsel should also be based on their experience, creativity, track record, connections, and efficiency in the fee structure.

Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?

First, because we work with each of the team members, across all areas of the business, from the engineers and architects to environmental technicians and financial managers, we must have a broad understanding of the business goals and structure. We are trained to think critically and perceive risks where no one else can see them; but also, to provide adaptable structures for the business to continue safely. It is particularly important to build a strong relationship with team members so they can trust their ability to help the business. Finally, we must aim to continually learn new legal skills and acquire new legal knowledge. The sum of all the previous aspects is the centre of our role as promoter of change.

As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?

The key issue is to understand that the business is continuously changing, and we must be ready and able to keep up with that speed. Lawyers are not there to say no at the outset, but to take risks and be proactive in finding creative solutions to offer the team. That means in-house lawyers need adaptability and business acumen. Other key issues, at least for me, are ethics and clear and effective communication, with engineers, with the management team, with owners and shareholders.

How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?

In-house lawyers build strong relationships with clear and continuous communication through regular and various check ins. The role of the lawyer is to cooperate and collaborate with the development of the business. This requires proactivity, knowledge, creativity, and flexibility.
