What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
My legal team led BNP Paribas Cardif’s legal strategy for the implementation of various regulatory changes of relevance to the industry that had the potential to generate relevant impacts on our business which could be adequately anticipated, addressed, and mitigated.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
In-house lawyers have a fairly holistic view of the business, processes, and challenges that an organisation faces in its day-to-day operations.
This gives us an advantage when it comes to proposing solutions that not only have a strictly regulatory compliance look but are also commercially viable. Additionally, in-house lawyers are in a very good position to cover aspects that today are essential in the decision-making process of organisations, such as the impact that our products and services generate on the environment and society, which in turn contributes to carrying out changes in a sustainable manner.
As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?
For several years now, the role of legal management has changed from a focus on the knowledge and management of regulations, to one that focuses on supporting the decision making of the company.
In this way, and as part of this change, I am convinced that the role of lawyers within companies should be to provide strategic advice that allows the business to move forward, anticipating those aspects that must be considered in the development of their activities, not only to comply with legal requirements, but also for them to live up to the standards and expectations of the social environment in which our companies operate.
