How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
At J.P. Morgan, crisis management and preparedness are integral parts of the legal function. We regularly evaluate potential legal risks, such as regulatory changes and economic factors, and establish communication protocols to ensure clear internal communication. Regulatory compliance is critical, and we stay abreast of local and international regulatory updates while maintaining a proactive dialogue with regulators. We align with business strategy by working closely with business units to ensure our legal advice supports business goals. Legal risk management is embedded into the business’s overall risk strategy. By focusing on these areas, we effectively manage crises and align legal strategies with business objectives to ensure resilience.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
J. P. Morgan prioritises diversity and inclusion (D&I) as a core value, implementing a comprehensive global strategy to foster a diverse workplace. There is a strong commitment from leadership to drive D&I initiatives and promote an inclusive culture. The company makes active efforts to recruit diverse talent, including partnerships with diverse law firms and professional organisations. Initiatives to retain diverse employees include mentorship, sponsorship programs, and career development opportunities. Tailored D&I initiatives in Latin America focus on local cultural contexts and challenges. By embedding these strategies and initiatives, J. P. Morgan’s legal department in LATAM ensures a diverse and inclusive environment that aligns with the broader organisational goals.
In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently (these can be legal, political, economy or business-based)?
Fluctuating political stability and social unrest are driving policy changes and regulatory uncertainties. The focus is on post-pandemic recovery, foreign investment in mining and energy, and support for SMEs. Growth in fintech and e-commerce is prompting updates to data protection and cybersecurity laws. Changes in labor laws and pension system reforms aim to improve social protections and working conditions.
