Spotlight on: My career

I´ve been working as an in-house lawyer for insurance companies for over 18 years, becoming an expert in corporate and insurance regulations, having experience in both life and non-life insurance companies and in various lines of business. I also had the opportunity of incorporating Everest in Chile, and being part of the process in Colombia, and Mexico. During my career I have reported to different foreign groups, and worked with colleagues from different countries, cultures, and ways of doing things, which helped me improve my communication skills and adaptability to change.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Our role as legal counsel is to provide certainty during crises periods, supporting the business by reviewing and anticipating different possible scenarios and how to approach them from a legal perspective, getting advice from other experts in the matter to get a broader view of the issue and how to overcome difficulties. Providing viable alternatives from a legal point of view to achieve business goals while mitigating existing risks in the face of uncertainty seems to me to be the best way to deal with this type of situation.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

The company considers sustainability as a relevant factor in its business strategy, including these aspects, for example, in its investment decisions and business underwriting. The general counsel contributes by promoting the creation of the necessary corporate governance to support the formal adoption and execution of such practices, highlighting the regulatory relevance of the matter for the Regulator and Investors.
