Juan Esteban Lavall Zaldívar is a distinguished legal professional with a remarkable journey spanning law, public policy, and academia. A graduate of Diego Portales University, where he earned his law degree, and a Master’s degree holder in Public Policy from Georgetown University, his career has been defined by excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to various spheres.
With a diverse labour background, Lavall has held key positions across esteemed institutions. As the general counsel of the Banking Association of Chile since May 2014, he has showcased his adeptness in navigating complex legal landscapes and providing strategic counsel. His partnership role at Rencoret, Larrain & Urzua from April 2012 to April 2014 underscored his collaborative approach in legal matters.
Notably, Lavall’s contributions to the Central Bank of Chile were pivotal. Serving as deputy general counsel from January 2004 to March 2012, he played a crucial role in ensuring legal compliance and efficiency. His tenure as a senior associate at Carey & Cia. within the banking and financial group from September 2000 to December 2003 further solidified his expertise in intricate financial matters.
Lavall’s commitment to public service is evident through his involvement in the Central Bank of Chile’s legal department from October 1996 to August 2000. Earlier in his career, he served as the secretary of the presidency ministry from September 1995 to September 1996, contributing to high-level decision-making.
His global perspective was enriched during his consultancy at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C., from June 1995 to August 1995, reflecting his commitment to international legal dynamics.
Academically, Lavall’s influence has extended to nurturing legal minds. As a faculty member at Diego Portales University, he taught courses like Environmental Economic Analysis and Economics, enhancing students’ holistic legal education. His role as a Financial Regulation Professor at Universidad del Desarrollo further reflects his dedication to cultivating expertise in financial law.
