Head of legal - Latam | Mainstrean Renewable Power
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Navigating legal aspects during periods of instability requires a multifaceted approach. Firstly, fostering open and consistent communication within my team and across the organisation is paramount. Ensuring everyone is informed about the evolving situation and our strategic objectives enhances our collective resilience. For instance, during our recent debt reorganisation process, clarity and alignment with our broader business strategy were pivotal. Maintaining a transparent dialogue with our lenders and stakeholders enabled us to achieve consensus that safeguarded our financial stability and secured our ongoing operations.
Our legal strategy integrates with the company’s overarching goals by prioritising proactive risk management and compliance. This includes anticipating regulatory changes, which is particularly vital given the regulatory inefficiencies in Chile, such as delays in transmission lines, high systemic costs, and challenging permitting processes impacting the sector.
In managing crises, I focus on empowering my team to take ownership of their roles, fostering a culture of accountability, and encouraging innovative problem-solving. This approach ensures that we remain agile and responsive to challenges, thereby reinforcing the organisation’s resilience.
Ultimately, our legal department operates not in isolation but as a critical component of the company’s strategic framework. By ensuring that legal considerations support and enhance our business objectives, we contribute to Mainstream Renewable Power’s sustainable growth and stability.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Sustainability is at the core of our identity. Over the past four years, we have made significant strides not only in our growth but also in positively impacting the environment through the construction of renewable energy plants in Chile.
In our offices, we have embraced recycling and eliminated plastic use, embodying our commitment to a greener future. Our strict compliance policies ensure that sustainability is not merely a buzzword but a guiding principle in our decision-making.
I promote long-term thinking and sustainable strategies that benefit both our business and the planet. Together, we are building a legacy that we can all be proud of, ensuring a better future for our stakeholders and future generations by reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change.
