How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

I always request all the lawyers in my team to be very close to the business and all the company’s affairs. We must have a deep understanding of the company’s strategy, its objectives and concerns. Also, because of the many legal and regulatory changes we face, we must constantly keep ourselves informed about the legal trends and changes that are being discussed, and then study new regulations in detail.

What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?

Everything related to artificial intelligence will have a big impact on our role as general counsel. Lawyers should rely much more on AI and look for different ways it can help us. The Zurich Group is working on a lot of AI apps, many of which are designed to support the legal function. I ask my team to participate in meetings on AI news, training and promote its use, as sometimes people can be wary of it.

In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently?

The main legal trends in Chile are related to the Fintech Law and open finance, the new labour regulation with greater rights for workers, the new economic crime law that establishes a much tougher criminal statute for companies and their employees, the new personal data protection regulation that is soon to be approved by Congress. In addition, the high activity of regulators conducting audits and issuing new regulation.
