Seeking to achieve best-inclass corporate governance and improve efficiency inside its business, Compania General de Electricidad (CGE), which is 96.5% owned by the Spanish Gas Natural Fenosa, has recently undertaken a significant project to restructure its business. While working in close cooperation with external lawyers in Chile the legal department of CGE has been an important participant in this process, in particular, impressing with its advice on mergers of several elements within the group. Further to its involvement in such vital strategic projects, the unit generates value by routinely providing legal advice on matters pertaining to every aspect of the group’s activities. Considering the wide reach of CGE’s business (it is the largest electricity company in the whole of Chile with a 43% share of the local market) it is fair to say that the team has a lot on its plate. Given the company’s ambitious plans, the legal unit’s role inside the company is likely to gain even more prominence in the coming years.
