Chile is a major regional focal point for global engineering services group Jacobs, with two of the company’s six Central and South America office locations found within the country. Due to its extremely diverse range of products (that span the areas of architecture, engineering and construction, operations and maintenance, as well as scientific and specialty consulting), the company’s legal team is required to keep abreast of developments in a wide range of legal practice areas, external market trends and internal business units. This requires the in-house lawyers of Jacobs in Chile to be versatile, quick-learning individuals, who also possess the keen social intelligence and insight to keep track of multiple internal clients. Evelyn Kagi has headed Jacobs’ legal function in Chile since 2014, prior to which she worked in-house for AES Gener and mining company SKM Chile. Kagi takes a keen interest in external developments relating to the company, including renewable energy and other engineering and technological breakthroughs. She has also recently added fresh legal talent to the team; Constanza Farizo joined Jacobs in early 2018, bringing specialist knowledge in a relevant field in the process, in addition to dealing with environmental assessments, permits and analysis for mining projects. Farizo is an expert at negotiating water rights, having specialised in this area during her private practice period with Santiago-based law firm Peña & Daiber.
