Mastercard is a global financial credit card payment system, and online transactions powerhouse dealing with billions of transactions and functions at the heart of the global financial system. It is headquartered and its operational systems are run out of the US, but it has a strong presence in Chile, and other Latin American leading economies. Its Chilean legal team is led by country manager Patricio Sandoval, who according to a nominator, ‘has the ability to focus rapidly on the key legal issues with great support from his team. They are always committed to excellence in the legal service provided’. As country manager Sandoval overseas the legal team’s implementation of Mastercard’s governance and sustainability ethics, and the contracts, regulation, tax and all other legal concerns of the company in Chile. In 2015 the legal team helped in delivering an app called “Qkr!”, which allowed spectators of the international football tournament Copa America 2015, held in Chile, to order food and drinks during games from their seat and collect their shopping without queuing. Bringing this technology to Chile was a major achievement and indicated the team’s ability to assist the company in utilising the latest digital technology in Chile. Another example of this, is the team’s contribution in 2018 to the implementation of contactless technology on public transport in Valparaiso, a coastal city and a famous tourist attraction.
