How do you manage legal aspects during instability or crises to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of instability or crises, my approach to managing legal aspects focuses on proactive risk management, strategic communication, and rapid adaptation. With a strong international legal background and a diverse team of attorneys from the US, China, Singapore, and Indonesia, we collaboratively address complex cross-border challenges, showcasing our global perspective and experience.
Our team culture emphasises continuous learning and adept change management, allowing us to respond quickly to evolving legal landscapes. We leverage a mix of data protection measures and contract management systems to ensure efficient legal operations, compliance, and timely decision-making, even in high-pressure situations.
Transparent communication and collaboration are at the core of our strategy. We work closely with business leaders to ensure that legal solutions align with broader crisis management plans, turning challenges into organisational resilience and growth opportunities.
What is a topic (business-related or otherwise) are you passionate about, and why?
I am particularly passionate about the impact of Chinese investment in Southeast Asia, driven by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The BRI has been instrumental in fostering infrastructure development, economic growth, and regional integration across Southeast Asia. One notable example is the Galang Batang Economic Zone in Indonesia, owned and operated by Nanshan Group.
The Galang Batang Economic Zone is a flagship project demonstrating the tangible benefits of strategic investment under the BRI. It has transformed the local economy by enhancing infrastructure, increasing trade capacity, and creating job opportunities. As part of Nanshan’s commitment to sustainable development, this economic zone includes critical facilities such as alumina refineries, energy plants, and ports designed to boost Indonesia’s industrial capacity and strengthen its role in regional trade.
What excites me about this topic is the potential for projects like Galang Batang to promote broader economic development for China, Indonesia, and the BRI. Infrastructure gaps can be bridged through strategic investments, improving connectivity, and creating a more resilient, integrated economy in the region.
Continued investment in such initiatives aligns with countries’ commitment to fostering mutual growth and enhancing economic ties. The success of the BRI in projects like Galang Batang reflects a model of sustainable development that supports long-term financial stability, innovation, and prosperity across the region.
How do you build relationships with other teams in the company?
As general counsel at Nanshan Group, I prioritise building strong team relationships by respecting differences, valuing diversity, and promoting shared values. With a global legal team, I emphasise understanding various perspectives through active listening and open dialogue, fostering trust and effective collaboration.
Nanshan’s diverse workforce is one of our greatest strengths. I encourage embracing different working styles, languages, and cultures through intercultural workshops and team-building activities. I ensure an inclusive environment where all contributions are valued.
Helping teams worldwide adapt to Nanshan’s culture is essential to my role. I communicate and integrate our values into everyday interactions, guiding new members and mentoring international colleagues to align with Nanshan’s core principles.
Emotional intelligence is central to my relationship-building approach. By understanding others’ motivations and concerns, I create a supportive environment that encourages open communication and collaboration.
I regularly engage with other departments to align on projects, understand their needs, and offer legal support that adds value. My approach is rooted in respect, diversity, and emotional intelligence, which helps foster solid and meaningful relationships that drive success at Nanshan.
