Zhen Tan
Vice president and general counsel China | Sony (China)
Team size: 40+ (in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong)
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Sony Group has set up over ten legal entities in China with a total of more than 10, 000 employees with diversified business portfolios ranging from consumer electronics, semiconductor solutions, interactive entertainment (PlayStation®) to animation arts.
Based in Shanghai, I lead and manage Sony China legal, security and IP Group to provide these Sony group companies with professional support and services covering legal, compliance, privacy, information security, trade affairs and intellectual property.
My team and I are committed ourselves to fostering the corporate culture of ethics and integrity while managing legal, compliance and regulatory risks by delivering to Sony group companies in China high-quality, cost-effective, and solution-driven support and services with speed, engagement, and innovation.
In addition to our team’s identity as a trusted business advisor, I, together with my team members, have been thriving over the years to transform our team from a defender to an enabler to safeguard and sustain Sony’s growth in the Chinese market in the context of growing complexity and greater uncertainty.
As a result of the implementation of our strategy to bring our support and services closer to Sony’s business and closer to our staff, particularly to the younger generation. We are proud of helping Sony China achieve record high business results for the past years whereby making significant contributions to Sony’s global business performance.
My team are honored and privileged to receive Sony China Special Recognition Award/Special Appreciation Award over the past eight years in a row. In addition, Sony HQ presented my team with Award of Excellence of FY2021 Sony Group Sustainability Award.
What are the main projects that you have been involved in recently?
Cybersecurity and data privacy are emerging risks associated with our business and operation.
In addition to the implementation at local level of Sony’s global policies and programs on cybersecurity and data privacy, I worked with my team to carry out quite a few significant projects for our local entities to enhance our compliance with Chinese unique legal and regulatory requirements under Cyber Security Law and Personal Information Protection Law in China.
These projects include classified, multi-level cybersecurity protections as well as security assessment and standard contract filing with Chinese regulators for cross-board data transfer, among others.
What is a topic that you are passionate about, and why?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the topic that I have been interested in over the past couple of years. The blockbuster release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 marked the beginning of a boom.
The AI boom, including the advent of large language models and their associated chatbots, poses new challenges for privacy. Is our personal information part of a model’s training data? AI has also posed a risk to cyber security. Brute force, denial of service, and social engineering attacks are some examples of threats utilizing AI.
The risks of artificial intelligence to data privacy and cyber security are expected to increase rapidly with AI tools becoming more accessible to government, business, and people in China and beyond. We promote responsible AI to earn the trust of our stakeholders in the Sony brand when it comes to the deployment and use of AI tools. I work with my team and other business units and support functions to try to strike out a well-designed and well thought balance between the promotion of AI tools and the governance of AI tools. Our efforts in this regard will continue in the years and months ahead.
