Established in 1986 and launched in 1997, Geely is a global automotive group based in the city Hangzhou, consisting of many well-known international automotive brands including Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Volvo Cars, Polestar, PROTON, Lotus, London Electric Vehicle Company, Yuan Cheng Auto and Terrafugia with global operations spanning the automotive value chain, from research, development and design. The legal department is at the forefront of legal support navigating the company’s expansion, which has seen it grow to become China’s third largest carmaker, overtaking Japanese rivals Nissan, Toyota and Honda. A large part of this success is due to the legal department’s efficiency and success in finalising fundamental deals with strong global ambitions. In 2018, Geely acquired close to 10% of Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler for about US$9bn and became its largest shareholder. They previously took a majority stake in Proton’s Norwich-based subsidiary Lotus. The legal team is led by head of legal and compliance, Cindy Zhang who works closely with senior management of Geely Auto Group to synchronise the legal department with the business processes.
