Today it has expanded its business across the country under its strategy of long-term investment and development, becoming the largest R&D centre outside of the US. The China-based legal department is at the heart of China Microsoft’s business and technology innovation in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Led by longstanding chief legal counsel, Tim Cranton who joined Microsoft in 1999 and oversees the Great China region, the team manage legal and policy matters to advance Microsoft’s various areas of operation. The department is highly knowledgeable in the areas of cloud computing, cybersecurity, IP protection, data privacy, corporate compliance, and competition law and government policies, to further advance innovation across China. The legal department prides itself for its work within the “Digital Crimes Unit”, where they help IT teams build enforcement tools and other solutions to fight cybercrime threats involving hacking, fraud, malware and other online crimes. Earlier this year, the legal department assisted with the launch of the pink surface laptop, which will be sold exclusively in China.
