Skechers China
The in-house legal team at Skechers China has rapidly expanded, more than doubling in size in the last two years to accommodate its growing business. The legal team now has eight experienced and professional lawyers including legal specialists and managers divided into specialties of transactional contract and commercial matters, and regulation and compliance streams. Nancy Wei, associate legal director, leads the team that is becoming a key part of the company’s strategy and projects. In particular, the legal team has been heavily involved in Skechers China CAPEX investment project, a plan to build a 200,000 square meter distribution centre in Southern China. The investment includes the purchase of land, an advanced sorting system, and construction. The legal team advises and works closely with its counterparts in the US, on relevant contracts and issues in relation to the project. The team has also been involved in litigation against an IP copycat, which expanded its business aggressively across China. After a first trial and appeal trial, Skechers won the case and was compensated by the IP copycat for RMB3m with the promise to stop the infringement and liquidate infringing products. Wei says, ‘Solid legal knowledge and expertise are the basic requirements to deliver quality legal services and we shall not stop at legal expertise, but shall utilize it to explore solutions and support the business. As a team, though not big, we work together to build up and develop legal support to the company and its business growth, with each member to play their role effectively and grow step by step together both personal and professionally’.
