State Grid Corporation of China is the world’s largest utility company, and as of 2018, is the world’s second largest company overall by revenue. In order to maintain its global presence, the company’s strategic direction involves taking part in overseas investments and acquisitions. After the electricity plant-grid separation reform in early 2002, the assets of the company were divided into five power generation groups that retained the power plants and five regional subsidiaries belonging to the State Grid Corporation of China in Beijing. The legal department advises in these segmented areas, providing support to all subsidiaries in retaining the power plants that power over 1.1 billion people in 26 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, covering 88% of the national territory. The company also owns overseas assets in the Philippines, Brazil, Portugal, Australia and Italy. The legal team worked on the equity acquisition agreement with Parpublica and the Umbrella agreement with REN, successfully acquiring a 25% stake in REN Portugal, and subsequently making a contribution to the economic and social development for China and Portugal.
