Tencent is one of China’s largest investment holding companies with a diverse portfolio of assets from the IT, AI and entertainment industries. The Tencent Contracts and Transactions department (CTD) has over 50 counsels in four teams, overseeing the company’s investment related legal matters, empowering the company to grow continuously and creating opportunities for unrelenting success. Led by deputy general counsel of Tencent and general manager of CTD Richard Pu, the team is responsible for all investment compliance governance, M&A, capital market, financing, investment portfolios, technology transactions and international operations for this branch of the company. Pu identifies that the team ‘has a flat structure that fosters a culture of professionalism, openness, cooperation and collegiality’. In addition and unusually for a corporate legal team, CTD runs a cross-team training program in which everyone has the right to ask for participation in another teams’ work, an innovative management strategy designed to improve cross-company understanding of other teams’ work.
