Xiaomi is an innovation-driven internet company with smartphones and smart hardware connected by an IoT platform at its core. In the past three years, the Xiaomi legal department has achieved rapid development under the leadership of chief legal officer Dr Bin Sun, from less than ten employees in 2016 to 91 employees at present. The company possesses an excellent calibre of legal talent, with many lawyers coming from Fortune 500 companies, first-tier law firms, and courts. The legal department implements a very strong internal process using systemic legal analysis and internal reporting – perhaps unsurprising for such an innovative company in the internet sector. The Xiaomi legal department has supported a number of major strategic business deals in recent years too, for instance notably the company’s IPO and listing on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, strategic investments in iQiyi, Huami and 51 Credit Card and strategic business cooperation with Qualcomm, Google, Microsoft, CK Hutchison and other global conglomerates. The legal department also plays an important role in supporting the company’s legal claims and defence.
