In what ways do you see the in-house legal role evolving in your region over the next few years?
In the near future, an in-house legal team would have to work as an internal law firm, providing legal services to the company’s business areas and front office. To achieve this, the team members must give high-quality legal analysis. Companies with a presence in several countries within a determined region must look for regional teams, such as an in-house legal team, which can offer a complete service based on a regional target.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
New technological tools, such as software to review information, apps or software that provides legal advice or analysis, would impact the role of an in-house team or even external law firms that require legal services. Thus, in-house legal teams and their leaders (general counsel) would have to adjust the team member roles and obtain technological training to get the best mix between legal knowledge and technological advancements.
If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why?
I would advise admiring in-house lawyers to create the best legal team possible. Being surrounded by the best lawyers in each field is the key. Additionally, listening and motivating the group are some of the most vital aspects that a general counsel must show. No general counsel has all the knowledge thus, building a great team is the key.
