What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
One of the most significant transactions we have been involved in this year has been structuring our largest B-Bond to finance the Central Railroad Line project in Uruguay. The financing amounted to a $250m senior facility through a fixed rate B-Bond.
The legal team has had a pivotal role in structuring the Rumichaca-Pasto Toll highway project in Colombia — the largest infrastructure Social Bond in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Additionally, last year IDB Invest structured and purchased its first project bond in the US to provide approximately $240 m worth of financing to Rutas del Este, aimed at designing and constructing national roads 2 and 7 in Paraguay.
The Tacuarembo Salto Transmission Line project in 2021 has represented an incredible milestone for IDB Invest and Uruguay, seeking to ensure the reliability of the country’s national electricity transmission system while promoting the use of renewable energy.
What will be the main focus in the next 12 months of your company, and how do you intend to assist with this?
IDB Invest is a leading financial entity in Latin America. Our focus is now on mobilising institutional investors that are not typically familiar with the Latin American market. Our mandate is to attract them to bring more capital into the region. To achieve this, we are deeply involved in developing new products, in particular capital market related. As we did when we created our unprecedented B-Bond product, we will continue leading the market in structuring innovative products as well as taking the existing ones to the next level.
Which advice would you give to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, and why?
The key advice I would give to an aspiring in-house lawyer is to be aligned with the goals of the organisation. One thing I always say when people ask me about my job is that every day when I wake up, I am happy to go to work. I love what I do and what my IDB Invest does. It feels good to be able to help the region I am from, developing projects all around Latin America. It satisfies me.
Bein aligned with the goal of the organisation is, therefore, essential for me.
