Carlos Barrero
Head of legal and compliance | Mazda de Colombia
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
We created a contract management system that has significantly reduced our contract cycle time. This means we have more time to focus on core business functions. This came at no cost.
Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?
We must keep up with the evolution of technology, most particularly AI. We need to understand it, embrace it, and start to involve AI in our endeavours. According to our analysis, AI has a promissory potential: contract managing, legal analysis and risk measurement are just three examples of benefits we can enjoy.
What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Colombia?
In the automotive sector, the most important current trend is sustainability. Local regulations are being reviewed to ensure the importation of safe and sustainable vehicles. Our greatest challenge is to comply with new regulation requirements while at the same time ensuring cost-effective manufacture and meeting the demands of consumers.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Sustainability practices are vital for Mazda’s business operations. From the legal point of view, we support the business in identifying and analysing environmental regulation to quickly embrace sustainable practices.
What steps do you take to ensure the successful integration and adoption of new technologies among your team members?
Openness is the key word. At Mazda, we understand that human resources are limited, and we must maximise our efficiency. Therefore, we are always looking for alternatives to simplify our tasks and dedicate our efforts to meaningful endeavours. Our legal team is always asking other company departments for opportunities to utilise new technologies.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
In Mazda we recognise and respect the range of characteristics and perspectives present across the workforce. Also, we have systems and processes that enable employees to make the most of their unique talents, skills, and perspectives. Within the whole company, we foster a culture that gives many employees a voice and a true sense of belonging. All employees are provided with fair and equal opportunities based on their individual needs.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing effective risk management practices, and how have you overcome them?
New and effective risk management practices mean more work and controls, not only for the legal function, but for the whole company and its business associates. Creating and developing an understanding of its benefit is challenging.
