Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

Innovation can come up in different ways; however, we worked on two major projects that improved how the legal team supports the business. The first one is related to implementing a system to review, address, and comply with requirements related to privacy. This system allowed the legal team, among others, to capture the interactions with the different functions on Privacy matters and use this information to comply with further privacy framework obligations. The second refers to how the legal team participates and understands the core business. For this purpose, we created room for ‘a day in the life’ sessions of commercial representatives. We joined the commercial team for a day in their day-to-day job to understand their challenges, outcomes, and how they conceive the legal department, among other helpful insights.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

Artificial Intelligence and systems shall be part of the legal for sure. General counsel and attorneys in general must innovate in the way we do our job. We must incorporate Artificial Intelligence systems in the decision-making processes and the different risk management systems, just to name a couple of examples where innovation through the IA is needed.

What steps do you take to ensure the successful integration and adoption of new technologies among your team members?

The first step is to conduct regular research on technology solutions applied to current legal processes. This step is followed by scheduling meetings to discuss new technology implementation in current or future operations in the legal department.
