Senior legal counsel Covec Cluster | Mastercard Colombia
What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Colombia?
Mastercard works with businesses and governments around the world to improve the lives of the billions of people we serve. For more than 50 years, Mastercard has been pioneering technology to make payments simpler, smarter, and more secure. When we talk about trends according to our latest Mastercard Signals report exploring the future of payments, by the end of the decade, we will witness significant innovations that will reshape commerce and usher in “the next economy.” The transformative changes ahead include a reimagining of money, new ways of exchanging value, smart experiences that transcend physical and digital environments, and elevated principles of inclusivity and sustainability that change the way we design, build, and deliver products. In the context of the next economy, changing consumer expectations, emerging technologies and regulatory collaboration will all accelerate innovations in payments.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
There is something I have always admired and emphasised that makes me very proud to work for this company. Mastercard’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility, and our core value of operating ethically, responsibly and with decency, is directly related to our continued success as a business. We truly believe in and work every day under this mantra of “doing well by doing good”. In my role, we are committed to doing business the right way. This means operating ethically, honestly, fairly, and transparently, and complying with the laws and regulations wherever we do business.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
There is something really important about creating a truly good working environment that empowers people to reach their full potential. We work continuously to create an inclusive workplace where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, with the understanding that inclusion and diversity in all its forms make us stronger as a team and as a company.
What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?
When we talk about passion, for me it is essential to think of those things that are priceless. For me it is priceless that through my work, through the financial education training we provide, through my active participation in donation programmes, I can share my knowledge and donate my time to improve the quality of life of many people.
