Legal manager | Perenco Colombia
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
In response to this question, I would like to highlight a recent innovation that significantly improved the efficiency and collaboration within our legal team. Recognising the need for streamlined contract management, I spearheaded the implementation of a cloud-based contract management system. This system allowed us to centralise all our contracts, automate workflows, and track key milestones and deadlines.
The implementation of the contract management system did not come at a large expense as we opted for a user-friendly and cost-effective solution. Through this innovation, we were able to enhance transparency, reduce manual errors, and improve the overall efficiency of our contract management process. The system also provided us with valuable insights through reporting and analytics, enabling data-driven decision-making within the legal team.
Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?
Looking ahead, I anticipate several key developments that will shape the role of general counsel in the coming years. One significant trend is the increasing integration of technology in legal operations. General counsel will need to stay abreast of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and contract automation tools. Embracing these technologies will enable us to enhance legal processes, improve risk management, and deliver more strategic value to the organisation.
Additionally, the importance of sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations will continue to grow. General counsel will play a crucial role in embedding sustainability practices into core business operations, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and mitigating legal risks associated with ESG factors.
Furthermore, the evolving regulatory landscape and the need for robust compliance programs will require general counsel to stay vigilant and adaptable. We will need to proactively monitor and address regulatory changes, enhance internal controls, and foster a culture of compliance within the organisation.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
At Perenco, we have made sustainability a core pillar of our business strategy. We have implemented various measures to embed sustainability practices into our operations. These include:
As legal manager, my role in driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company is multi-faceted. I provide legal guidance on compliance with sustainability regulations and standards. I collaborate with cross-functional teams to embed sustainability into contractual agreements and business operations. I also work closely with our senior leadership to develop and implement sustainability strategies, ensuring alignment with legal requirements and risk mitigation.
By integrating sustainability into our core business operations and leveraging my legal expertise, we are able to create a positive impact on the environment, society, and our long-term business success.
