How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?  

During periods of instability or crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, my approach is to maintain an open-minded attitude towards ideas, even if they seem unconventional or inadequate at first glance. This flexibility allows us to adapt quickly and effectively, focusing on the core objectives of Decameron. Our legal strategy is aligned with our broader business strategy, prioritising resilience and sustainability in a very competitive industry that demands quick and business-oriented legal advisory. I ensure that my legal team is curious, constant learners and frameworks are flexible, safeguarding the company while supporting innovative solutions that help us navigate and thrive amidst challenges. 

What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently? 

Recently, our main transactions have included the divestiture of a business not aligned with our core business. This M&A transaction was particularly complex, involving legal and regulatory considerations across five jurisdictions. Successfully navigating these complexities underscored our ability to manage cross-border legal challenges effectively, ensuring compliance and maximising value for our stakeholders.  

Another noteworthy transaction was the execution of a commercial alliance with Wyndham. This strategic partnership aims to enhance our operations in Jamaica, Panama, and Mexico. By leveraging Wyndham’s extensive network and resources, we are positioned to expand our market presence and operational efficiency in these key regions. The alliance with Wyndham is designed to capitalise on synergies between our companies, enhancing our service offerings and guest experiences.  

These transactions reflect our strategic focus on aligning business operations with our industry strengths and growth objectives. They demonstrate our commitment to proactive portfolio management and strategic partnerships that drive value and support our long-term vision. Our legal team played a crucial role in these transactions, ensuring that all legal aspects were meticulously managed to support the overall business strategy and operational goals. What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments? 

AI is the most groundbreaking technology impacting the legal profession. Together with our IT department and providers, we are actively exploring ways to implement AI solutions. I agree with the idea that AI will not displace lawyers, but those who do not learn to use it effectively may be left behind. To stay updated on these and other developments, I maintain a curious approach and continuously engage in professional development, attend industry conferences, and collaborate with tech experts. Embracing AI allows us to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and innovation in our legal practices.
