Since beginning exploration in Colombia in 2002, AngloGold Ashanti has made significant investments into various greenfield projects in the country, which has resulted in two major discoveries – La Colosa in the Tolima province, and Gramalote in the Antioquia province. The ‘driven and ambitious’ legal team at AngloGold Ashanti in Colombia continues to support these significant mining projects, liaising closely with the government and mining authorities. Working seamlessly with senior management on key strategic issues, the team has showcased superior regulatory understanding across the structure of these significant projects. Over the past several years the department has shifted its focus to discussing strategic issues and participating in decision-making alongside senior management, transforming its role from a ‘fixer’ that provides a ‘reactive response’ into a result-oriented advisor to the business. An area of particular praise for the legal team has been the obtainment of an environmental license for the Gramalote project, the first to have been granted to a large scale mining project in Colombia for over three decades. In addition, the team has impressed with its work to drive socio-political strategy in the La Colosa project, as well as overseeing litigations related to the project.
